How to Make the Best Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is a classic dish loved by children and adults alike.

This recipe is super easy to make and is a big fan for potlucks and holiday gatherings. After a few months, the kids were raving about it - and even more impressive, the adults!

I don't like slow cooker recipes that require you to cook the pasta on the stove - it just takes away from the convenience of the slow cooker! So I came up with this recipe to make sure everything is done in the slow cooker.

If you're looking for creamy and delicious macaroni and cheese recipes, you'll want to save this slow cooker macaroni and cheese recipe!

For this recipe you need:

I used to useslow cooker linersA lot, because they can help a lot with cleaning. I haven't used them much lately, but I think they're pretty cool.

Do you have suggestions for ingredients?

I've been researching several slow cooker macaroni and cheese recipes and trying to come up with my own. There are so many different variations, it can be a bit overwhelming to be honest.

Some say it uses eggs, others say it ruins everything. However, I have no problem using eggs - I just make sure to mix them up and add them to all the other ingredients. You can substitute the flour if you like.

This is a pretty standard recipe, but here are some notes on the different ingredients:

  • Campbell's Cheddar Soup- I admit I wasn't too keen on adding this at first, but I think it helps make meals creamier. It is a little processed, you can leave it if you want. But I think it adds something special to the dish. You can find it in the soup section of most supermarkets.
  • fifty fifty- I've seen recipes that call for heavy cream, others that call for whole milk, etc. I decided to try it out and see how it worked, and it seemed like a good choice. It's heavier/lower in calories than heavy cream, but I think it's creamier than regular milk.
  • that- I used a mix of three shredded cheddar cheeses for this meal. Kraft has one, but I really like the Tilamook brand. You can also easily tear the cheese. I think it's wise not to just use a cheddar or even a cheese.

Can I change the recipe?

The great thing about macaroni and cheese is that it's so versatile. You can easily change or add toppings and it still tastes great.

Here are some changes to keep in mind:

  • Use a different cheese - I always recommend using some type of cheddar, but other types of cheese are also tasty. I've always loved shredded Italian mixed cheese! Gruyere is also a popular cheese in macaroni and cheese, as is Monterey Jack cheese.
  • bacon! I don't know about the macaroni and cheese, but it always seems to call for bacon. I always like to put slices of Kirkland brand bacon on top.
  • Spinach - We love spinach in macaroni and cheese, especially for our kids. It doesn't add much flavor, but it does add some nutrition.
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Season with a little hot sauce or paprika
  • We have a friend who likes to put Tony Chachere seasoning on his macaroni and cheese. At first I thought it was strange, but it looks really great on top!
